FOCUS ON PATTAYA UNITED

Our next opponents, on Saturday 23rd August, are Pattaya United, currently 11th in Division 1 (five points fewer than CMFC). Their last 2 results, just about sum up their season to date. They beat Bangkok FC (4th) at home, and then lost away to Khon Kaen (17th). Let’s look at some key facts about Pattaya United:

1. Pattaya United are strong at home, and weak away from home. They have won 8 of their 13 home matches this season, with notable scalps including Nakhon Ratchasima, Bangkok FC and BBCU. They have lost to Ang Thong and Navy, and CMFC beat them 5-1 on their visit to the 700 year stadium, earlier in the season.

2. The main danger man from Pattaya is Lopes (Brazilian) with 10 goals this season. He plays in the No 9 shirt, and can be a bit of a handful to play against. He will need to be man marked to nullify his effect. He is 36 years old now and maybe past his best as a striker. He only came on as a substitute in the match against Chiang Mai in the reverse fixture.

3. They were relegated from the Premier League last season, and their highest place finish in the TPL was 4th in 2011, but they have fallen quite significantly from that level in recent times.

CONCLUSION

Chiang Mai FC were not at their best, when they drew their last match against Ayutthaya FC, and will be looking for a better performance against Pattaya United. Likewise, Pattaya will be looking for an improved performance after their weekend loss to Khon Kaen. I am concerned that the match kicks off at the early time of 4:00pm, and this could be a problem for the CMFC team. The result may also depend on whether Benetiz plays or not. All of these factors suggests another close match is likely on Saturday.

PREDICTION
A 1-0 win for CMFC.
